Mitchell Fries 35R3 (spinning mirror reflex, Arri PL mount)

With our Fries 35R3 conversion it is possible to utilize your standard Arri-PL, Mitchell BNCR, Panavision, Contax Zeiss, or Nikon lenses on a high speed 35mm Mitchell dual pin registered camera.  We can shoot with Acadeny center or Super 35 centered for maximum use of the 35mm frame.  The Mitchell camera is known for its world famous steadiness, reliability and high-speed capabilities. Through the lens reflexing is accomplished by using a rotating mirror which interrupts the image to the film and reflects it to the viewfinder and video tap.

The 35R3 reflex viewfinder uses coated optics for a crisp, bright image at 5X magnification. The eyepiece is adjustable for individual focus and is positioned for comfortable right or left eye viewing. The viewing image is manually correctable through 360 degrees rotation of the viewfinder.

Out of necessity the original Mitchell shutter had to be modified to accommodate PL mount, Arri, Cooke and ZEISS lenses. The mirror doubles as the camera shutter with a fixed opening of 170 degrees. Because of the danger of light leakage during extreemly long exposures this camera is not reccomended for stop-motion animation. (We have a Fries 35R camera with a beamsplitter reflex system for stop motion) The ground glass is readily interchangeable and available for all standard formats including 1.85/1.33, 1.66, 2.35 etc. Our standard is Academy / TV safe action. We can adjust lens centering for Super 35 and have a 16-9 and super TV groundglass (perfect for footage to be transfered to Hi Definition.)  Interchangeable lensmounts are available for Arriflex PL, BNCR, Panavision, Contax Zeiss still or Nikon mounted lenses. The 35R3 ships with all 5 of the lensmounts listed.

Our video assist is a 1/2" low-light level video Sony XC-99 color camera.

Weight: 18 pounds (camera only); Standard Mitchell magazines are used. Normal package ships with 4 400ft. mags. The motion control heads are not compatible with 1000ft. mags.  Please order only 400 ft. loads.  The camera base mounting configuration is compatible with the Arri system.  The camera normally ships with a base that accomodates Arriflex 15MM rods which are included with the Gizmo motion control follow focus system.
